Invisible Invaders: Exploring Microorganisms in Sixth Class

28th Jan, 2026

Sixth Class have been learning about microorganisms as part of our Science curriculum, exploring both the advantages and disadvantages of these tiny living things. To bring this learning to life, the children carried out a hands-on investigation using nutrient agar to test a variety of surfaces around our school environment.

Samples were taken from everyday places such as desks, keyboards, shoes, stair bannisters, the staffroom kettle and even inside our cheeks. Over a two-week period, the children observed and recorded the growth of bacteria on the agar plates. The results sparked great interest — and a fair bit of surprise — as pupils saw first-hand just how many microorganisms can exist on surfaces we use every day.

This experiment provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to develop their scientific skills by predicting, observing, recording and discussing results, while also deepening their understanding of hygiene, health and the role microorganisms play in our world.
