Exploring Algebra Through Problem Solving

11th Jan, 2026

Sixth Class recently took part in a cognitively challenging maths lesson focused on early algebra and pattern recognition. The children were presented with an open-ended problem that encouraged them to explore relationships between tables, chairs and shapes, and to look for patterns, rules and generalisations.

Working collaboratively, pupils used a variety of concrete maths resources to test ideas, represent their thinking and justify their reasoning. There was a strong focus on discussion, questioning and teamwork as groups shared strategies, challenged each other’s thinking and refined their solutions.

It was wonderful to see the level of engagement, problem-solving skills and mathematical language used throughout the activity.
