Exploring 3D Shapes Through Maths Stations

11th Mar, 2026

Last week in Sixth Class, our classroom transformed into a busy 3D Maths Investigation Hub as the children rotated through a series of hands-on maths stations exploring the properties and construction of three-dimensional shapes.

At the Shape Investigation Lab, pupils examined a variety of 3D shapes and carefully recorded their properties. They investigated the number of faces, edges, and vertices on each shape, discussing what they noticed and comparing different shapes. The children also made predictions about what the nets of the 3D shapes might look like, thinking about how each solid could unfold into a flat shape.

The Build a Shape Engineering Table challenged the children to become designers and builders. Using matchsticks and playdough, they constructed models of different 3D shapes based on challenge cards.

At the Nets Detective Station, pupils explored how 3D shapes can be unfolded into nets. They cut, folded, and assembled paper nets before investigating digital nets using Polypad on the tablets.

Through hands-on exploration, the class developed a deeper understanding of 3D shapes while having great fun along the way.
