Exploring 2D Shapes in Sixth Class

11th Jan, 2026

As part of our Maths learning, Sixth Class have been busy exploring 2D shapes through a range of hands-on and engaging activities. Using Polypads, the children constructed and investigated different shapes, examining their properties such as sides, vertices and angles in an interactive way.

The class also took part in a fun ‘Maths Eyes’ activity, where they explored the school environment to spot real-life examples of 2D shapes. Using the photos they captured, pupils brainstormed mathematical vocabulary linked to 2D shapes and created questions suitable for both junior and senior classes, helping them to see how maths connects to the world beyond the classroom.

To further develop their understanding, pupils used Tangrams to create and manipulate shapes, building problem-solving skills and spatial awareness. Geoboards were also used to construct a variety of 2D shapes, allowing the children to explore shape properties in a practical and visual manner.
